DigiLocker Explained: The smartest thing you can do with your financial documents in 10 minutes

Rahul's father passed away unexpectedly in 2022. He was 61, too young, and completely unprepared administratively.

The family spent the next three months trying to locate documents. The original LIC policy was in a cupboard in the bedroom somewhere. The property papers were in a bank locker they needed an official death certificate to open. The PAN card had been submitted somewhere for KYC and never returned. The vehicle RC was in the car's glove compartment in a city 400 kilometers away.

Three months of grief made significantly harder by the absence of organized, accessible documentation.

This story is more common than most families admit. And it is almost entirely preventable.

DigiLocker is not just a convenience tool. For Indian families, it is a financial safety net, one that most people have on their phone but use at about 10% of its potential.

What is DigiLocker?

DigiLocker is a Government of India initiative under the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY), launched in 2015 as part of the Digital India programme. It provides every Indian citizen with a secure, cloud-based personal document storage space linked to their Aadhaar number.

Each DigiLocker account comes with 1 GB of free storage. Documents issued by government agencies and verified issuers appear directly in your DigiLocker no uploading required. You can also upload your own documents for personal storage.

DigiLocker documents are legally recognized under the Information Technology Act, 2000 and are accepted as equivalent to original documents by government departments, banks, insurance companies, and other regulated entities.

As of 2024, DigiLocker has over 30 crore registered users and hosts over 600 crore documents from more than 2,200 issuing organizations.

What financial documents should you store on DigiLocker?

How to set up DigiLocker in 10 minutes

Download the DigiLocker app from the App Store or Google Play. Sign up using your mobile number linked to Aadhaar. Verify with OTP. Your Aadhaar-linked documents will populate automatically.

For additional documents: go to "Search Documents", type the issuer name link your account. For personal uploads: use the "Upload Document" section clearly label each file with document type, date, and relevance.

Create a folder structure that makes sense for your family: Identity, Insurance, Investments, Property, Tax.

Share your DigiLocker login credentials or at minimum, the existence and access method, with one trusted family member. A DigiLocker that only you can access provides limited value to your nominees in an emergency.

One step most people skip and shouldn't

Write a simple one-page "Financial Summary" document listing all your accounts, policies, investments, and loans with account numbers and contact details. Upload this to DigiLocker as well.

This single document updated once a year, could save your family months of searching and thousands of rupees in missed claims.

It costs nothing. It takes 30 minutes. And it is one of the most genuinely caring financial acts you can do for the people who depend on you.

The bottom line

Rahul's family eventually found everything they needed, but it took three months, significant stress, and at least one policy that lapsed during the search because the renewal notice went to an email nobody was monitoring.

DigiLocker doesn't require a finance degree. It doesn't cost money. It asks only for 10 minutes of setup and 30 minutes once a year to update.

Your documents are already there, waiting. The only question is whether your family will be able to find them when they need to.
